Gone are the heydays of the largest tin producer in the world and now, Ipoh is making its presence felt in the world map again for its wonderful food. There is something special about the noodles in Ipoh. Locals attribute it to the clean water source while some attribute to the skills and passion of the chefs.

There are some who says food prepared with love, taste awesome. Whatever the reason it may be, we are happy as long as our appetite is fulfilled. By the way, Ipoh and Penang are always the rival for the best food.

Here are a few of the local’s favourite noodles in Ipoh:

1. Dry Curry Bee Hoon Kueh Tiaw with Shrimp Paste

The stall serves curry and soup mee (yellow noodles) which can be substituted with bee hoon (rice noodles & often spelled as mee hun) or kueh tiaw (white flat strips) or mixture of all three or two.

However, the most delicious delite is the dry curry bee hoon kueh tiaw. The bee hoon kueh tiaw is topped with a bit of fried onion oil, soy sauce and than drenched in a thick, rich and creamy curry. The curry is made from a secret blend of approximately 15 types of spices such as onion, garlic, citronella, galangal, lemon grass, turmeric, ginger flowers, peppers, coconut milk and so forth. Do not forget to request for sambal belacan (shrimp paste) for an extra taste.

The stall is located in between Restoran Foo San and Wong Kwai Kee Trading at Jalan Laxamana.


2. Handmade Wan Tan Mee (Chinese Noodles)

Wan tan mee is served either dry (dark soy sauce base) or soup (chicken and pork broth) topped with taugeh (bean sprout) or choy sum and garnished with chopped scallions . Apart from the dry or soup option, the wontoon (dumplings) served here is prawn and pork.

For the dry wan tan mee, the noodles are tossed in a dark soy sauce, topped with taugeh or choy sum. The wontons are served in a bowl with soup. For the wan tan mee soup, everything is served together. A mug of fresh pickled green chilies are available on each table. Pickled green chillies are considered as an essential for wan tan mee. Cheong Kee Wan Tan Mee Stall have been serving handmade wan tan mee for over 40 years. The shop is situated behind the Buntong Wet Market.

3. Spicy Soup Mala Pan Mee

Pan mee (flat flour noodles) is a Hakka-style noodle, originating from Malaysia.  Is it usually served in soup or soy sauce.

The stall at Golden Point (GP) Food Court in Jalan Ng Soon Teik, First Garden served rather a unique Spicy Soup Mala Pan Mee. The pan mee is served in a delicious spicy savoury broth that were cooked overnight. Topped with sliced tender chicken, potatoes leaves, fish ball, egg and a heap of crispy anchovies.
