Eat Authentic Ipoh Food

Since Ipoh is known as the food haven of Malaysia, the number one best Ipoh nightlife activity on the list is eating food. There are certain hawker stalls and restaurants which only opens when the sun sets in Ipoh. You may choose from local Ipoh food all the way to western cuisines.

For local food, head down to the Tong Sui Kai hawker street. Tong Sui Kai means “Dessert Street” in Cantonese. The street comprises a stretch of food stalls selling deserts and other meals. Famous food to try here includes mixed fruits ABC, rojak, noodles and many more.

Ipoh Chicken Rice

Ipoh’s bean sprouts chicken rice is a must-try dish when you visit Ipoh. You may try it at Lou Wong Chicken Rice Restaurant or Ong Kee Bean Sprouts Chicken Restaurant as these are the two best restaurants for Ipoh chicken rice.

A few other nice places for dinner in Ipoh:

  • Durbar at FMS – This is one of the oldest restaurants/bars in Ipoh. It has been revived after 11 years of abandonment. Now, it provides some delicious Hainanese and Western cuisine. This place is pork-free but serves alcohol.

  • Plan B Ipoh – A cozy place to hang out and taste a vast variety of dishes. The staff and waiters here are so friendly that they’ll recommend the perfect dish for you based on your preferences.

  • Miker Food Ipoh – A hipsterrific restaurant located along the Kinta Riverfront. Miker Food provides a rare combination of pizzas, western and Malaysian cuisines.

Brick & Barrels (Live Music)

Nested among the street of bars along Jalan Lau Ek Ching, Brick & Barrels is one of the coolest bars in Ipoh. It has amazing dishes with a wide range of beers offered to enjoy over some live or DJ music.

Atas Speakeasy Bar Ipoh

Ipoh’s most talked about speakeasy bar, Atas, is surely the best place to hang out at night. A cozy less crowded place with delicious food and classy booze can be found here. Atas is a perfect selection for good conversations and board games.

Healy Mac’s Irish Bar Ipoh

If you prefer a place to chill instead of a dance club, Healy Mac’s Irish Bar should the perfect selection. This Irish bar provides the best ambiance to have a quality conversation with a touch of Irish feel and comfort. It has won a lot of awards and therefore assured of a wonderful experience.

Stroll Through Parks

Night walks in parks around Ipoh have been one of the activities loved by both locals and tourists. Below are some of the top happening places to have a relaxing walk at night:

Kinta Riverfront Ipoh

Along the riverbank, you’ll find many shops and food stalls. On certain weekends, there would be events such as Ipoh Food Festival and live bands are held here. It is definitely a lovely place to unwind after a tiring day.

– There’s a hipster barbershop called Ipoh Barber & Comber along the Riverwalk
– You may also rent a bicycle to ride along the riverbank

Bulatan Amanjaya (Meru Raya Park)

Slightly further away from the Ipoh town is Meru Raya Park (formerly known as Bulatan Amanjaya). Meru Raya Park is the biggest roundabout in Ipoh. The huge space on this roundabout has been used for several activities such as jogging, stage events, kids playground, and cycling.

There are also bicycle rides (2 – 4 person bicycles) and food stalls surrounding the place. On the weekends, you may see a lot of people gathering just to hang out at this park.

Visit the Night Market

Night markets can be found in many places around Ipoh, being it in the city center and also the residential areas.

Gerbang Malam is one of the top night markets located in Ipoh’s city center. Started in 2003, this night market has been in operation every single night. There are varieties of stalls selling goods such as clothing, belts, shoes, makeup items, children toys and many more. Besides the market, there are also several famous eateries nearby.

Night Park & Hot Springs

Lost World of Tambun theme park offers tons of night activities such as Luminous Forest, Flaming Percussion show, Tarantula Alley and night petting zoo. There are also natural hot springs and spa to be experienced at night. Lost World of Tambun will be a perfect Ipoh nightlife experience if you travel with your kids.

Visit an Amusement Park (MAPS Perak)

Being known as the first Animation theme park in Asia, Movie & Animation Park Studios (MAPS) Ipoh offers a wide variety of attractions and shows up until late at night. Rides such as the Hyperspin(Image below) are beautiful at night. The place is kid friendly and worth a visit if you have a full or half day.

Go For a Movie

The locals simply love going to movies. The cinemas in Ipoh are rather quiet and less crowded compared to cinemas in bigger cities like Kuala Lumpur.
Here are 3 main cinema theatres around Ipoh:

  • GSC Cinemas (Ipoh Parade Mall) – One of the main cinema theatres in Ipoh’s city center. It is located on the top floor of Ipoh Parade Mall.

Going around Ipoh at night is generally safe. Although there are cases of snatch thefts just as found in many countries, Ipoh is usually quiet at late night. Just keep your valuables and belongings close to you at all times and you’ll be just fine.

    i always love Ipoh. it has been more than 10 years i don’t get a chance to go there due to study and far from my house. back in 2006, my family live in perak and almost every week we hangout at ipoh because there are a lot of nice place. btw thanks for sharing 🙂
